What is a keystone species?A keystone species is a species which has an impact on its community that is proportionally larger than its abundance or size. Keystone species are present in communities in environments all over the world. A notable example of this phenomenon is the case of reintroducing wolves at Yellowstone National Park - the reintroduction of a relatively small number of wolves into the park had extremely significant effects on the surrounding environment, from the deer to the rivers.
